Most suggestions you see elsewhere answer a question that is not yours: what is doing well right now, and what the catalogue has an interest in pushing. FriendFlix starts from the other end: what you rated, and what that says about you.
A taste profile, not an average
Your ratings build a profile: favoured genres, appetite for demanding storytelling, sensitivity to pacing and emotional weight. Two people who give a film the same score may have loved it for opposite reasons. That difference is what the profile tries to capture.
Every suggestion says why
A recommendation without a rationale cannot be checked: there is no telling whether it knows you or got lucky. Here every title comes with the specific reason it surfaced, tied to something you already liked. You judge the reasoning, not just the result.
Safe bets, and deliberate risks
Suggestions are split between safe bets, bolder picks and titles frankly outside your usual range, with an explanation for those of what might hook you. That is what avoids the classic failure of recommender systems: locking you inside what you already liked.
The profile sharpens with every rating
Rating a suggestion happens on the card, without opening the detail view. A negative verdict counts as much as a positive one: knowing what you disliked narrows the field far faster than the reverse.

How many ratings before suggestions get useful?
About thirty is enough for relevant results. Below that, the app would rather tell you than guess.
Can I get recommendations for several people at once?
Yes, that is what crossed profiles do: they overlay several histories and look for what satisfies everyone.
Do recommendations cover more than films and shows?
Yes. Video games and books are rated on the same scale and feed the same profile.
